How to File Taxes on a Home Business

Running a home based business can be considered relatively easy these days thanks to the internet. As with any other businesses, you will need to file taxes on your income and earnings. Contrary to what some might believe, the process of filing taxes on a home based business is no different than what would be the case with filing taxes on a brick and mortar business or working as an independent contractor.

You would simply log the amount of money that your business generated, deduct all legitimate business expenses, and then pay the tax on the profits. Profits or losses would all be presented on the Schedule C form that would accompany your 1040 tax return.

You will be required to make estimated tax payments through the year on a quarterly basis as well.

Keep in mind, you will be required to pay self-employment tax since this is the category you would fall under with a home based business. However, there may be additional deductions you can take for business use of a home.

It is extremely important to employ proper and accurate bookkeeping when you run a home based business. Many will take a casual attitude towards this and that is a huge mistake. You need to treat your business like a business because it is a business! This means proper bookkeeping is a must.
